Tournament Wrap-Up/ Star Watch

Cardinal Classic

USSSA Holiday Shootout

Dec. 14-16, 2012

I received an email from a coach after the tournaments this weekend that I would like to share with everyone:

It was an outstanding experience for our team. Excellent venue, officials, and competition for our team in the 6th grade D1-12U.

Any number of teams in our 2 pools could beat the other on any given day. The level of competition was very strong, you had to give great team effort. Also, the level of collaboration and respect among coaches and players was equally strong. As a coach of many different age levels in the past, you can see rivalries and friendships emerge within this age group of boys and the coaches……..with the intensity and great effort between the lines and respect after the games are complete.

These are the kinds of things that we value most when running our tournaments and this past weekend’s games demonstrated these values to the utmost.  Thank you to all coaches, parents and players alike.

Congratulations to all of this past week’s champions:

Cardinal Classic

USSSA Holiday Shootout

Northwest Extreme-ly Tough to Beat

Two tournament entries; two tournament championships.  Nine games played; nine games victorious.  This has become the trend for the Northwest Extreme 6th grade Division II basketball team.  Coach Matt Stoecklein has this team out to a red-hot start with his boys playing flawlessley in all phases of the game.  Northwest Extreme outscored their opponents 210-128 at the Cardinal Classic last weekend including a 46-41 victory over the Kansas Cagers in the championship game.  Eli Dowis, Drake Simmons, Creid Stoecklein, Cade Gustafson, Collin Breckenridge, Jacob Lewis and Tyler Houchin have formed a chemistry with one another that has this team looking untouchable within the division.

Kansas Hoopsters Impress in their First Tournament Together

Macy Smith, Kendall Michalski Rylee Ray, Macy Decker, Hallie Hay, Makayla Akin, Joelle Shurtz, Elease Stafford and Megan Lucas make up the roster for the 7th grade Kansas Hoopsters.  Based on their performance at the USSSA Holdiay Classic this past weekend, you’d think they had been together for years.  In fact, this was the first tournament the girls had ever played together.  Two practices prior to the tournament was the only familiarity the girls had with one another, but when they took the court together for the first time last weekend, everything seemed to click.  The Hoopsters went 4-0 on their way to the 7th grade title, and although they were involved in some close games, their confidence in each other never waivered.  There is something special to be said about a group of girls who can come together the way the Hoopsters did this past weekend.  With some more time under their belt, the Kansas Hoopsters are going to be a very scary team to cross paths with.

***The Stars Came Out to Shine ***

Vince Ray (Runnin Gunners White, 3B D1)

They say offense wins games but defense wins championships.  Well if that’s the case, Vince Ray is exactly the type of player you want on your team.  Ray was called on to shut down the opposing team’s best player each game, and that’s exactly what he did.  Ray collected an average of six steals per game over the course of the tournament.  In fact, it was a rarity for opposing teams to even get the ball across half court.  His defensive pressure helped lead his team to a 4-0 record and the 3rd grade championship at the Cardinal Classic this past weekend.  Coach Michael Sansone firmly believes that three out of those four wins could have had different outcomes if it weren’t for Vince Ray’s lockdown defense.  I guess what they say is true; defense does win championships.

Allen Coy (B3C Runnin Gunners, 4B D2)

When you think of “pure shooters” there are a few names that come to mind: Ray Allen, Dirk Nowitzki and Stephen Curry to name a few.  Well, we can add one more name to that list: Allen Coy.  Behind the stroke of Coy this past weekend, the B3C Runnin Gunners swept the 4th grade Division I at the Cardinal Classic.  Behind some great screens from Jackson Corf, Jacob Fox and Bo Kelso, and the quick ball movement and precise passes from Dawson Goe, Ryan Williams and Harrison Day, Coy absolutely lit up the scoreboard.  He averaged 15 points a contest with a game high 18 points in the championship game.  This kid can heat up in a hurry!

Megan Lucas (KS Hoopsters, 7G)

Megan was the face of consistency for the Kansas Hoopsters at the USSSA Holiday Classic, averaging just under 10 points for the tournament.  Megan helped lead a group of girls playing with each other for the first time to the 7th grade girls title.  The sky is the limit for what Megan and the rest of the Kansas Hoopsters can accomplish together.

If you would like to see your team or a player featured in the Star Watch column, fill out the Star Watch Nomination Sheet located on our website and send it back to me at zach@agapehoops.com.  I appreciate any feedback I receive from you guys and hope to see more nominations sent my way in the future.

2012-2013 Agape Hoops Girls/Boys DIII State Championships

February 22-24

KC Metro Area

The sounds of sneakers squeaking against the hardwood, whistles blowing and emphatic cheers from fans resonated through the walls of various gymnasiums across the Kansas City Metro area last weekend, as players and coaches from over 140 teams competed against each other with one goal in mind: To be crowned state champions.  These players put their blood, sweat and tears on the line in hopes of walking away with the gold around their necks, and their gutty performances left us with many memories that will last a lifetime.  Congratulations to all of the teams who had a chance to play on the grandest of stages, and thank you for all of the hard work you put in!

In the end, though, only one team from each division came away crowned king or queen.  Let’s take a closer look at your 2012-2013 state champions:

*We Are The Champions*

KC Superstars (3G)

Head Coach: David King

Top Scorer: Olivia King (14 ppg)

The Superstars were definitely shining bright at the State Championships winning all four of their games by and average of 17.5 points, including a 24-18 victory over the Hot Shots in the championship game.

Team Supreme Black (4G D2)

Head Coach: MiKayla Jensen

Top Scorer: Lilly Queen (7 ppg)

Team Supreme lost a close game to the Lady Rebels in pool play but got a chance at redemption in the championship game.  They wouldn’t squander their second chance against the Lady Rebels, winning the championship and letting everyone know who truly ‘reigns supreme’ in the division.

Magic (4B D3)

Head Coach: Rodger Sprouse

Top Scorer: Jaylon McDaniel (12.6 ppg)

The Magic certainly lived up to their name at the State Championships this past weekend, sweeping a tough 4th grade division with an average margin of victory of 12.8 ppg.  They defeated the Kearney Bulldogs 33-25 in the championship game.  Abracadabra.

Lady Bears (5G D1)

Team Coach: Eddie Emmons

Top Scorer: Abigayle Emmons (11 ppg)

After losing their first game of the tournament against the KC Lightning, the Lady Bears clawed back to win their next three games and earn a spot in the championship against, you guessed it, the KC Lightning.  This time around the Lady Bears’ toughness was too much for the Lightning as the Bears won the contest 30-28 to earn the gold.

Ladybugs (5G D2)

Head Coach: Paul Alberson

Top Scorer: Kassidy Heying (8.4 ppg)

Don’t let the team name fool you, these girls are fierce.  The Ladybugs went 5-0 on their way to the state title while beating teams by an average of 16 ppg.  They defeated B3C Swarm in the title game by a score of 31-18.  I think a name change is in order, don’t you?

CO MO Triple Threat (5B D3A)

Head Coach: Thaddeus Hamilton

Top Scorer: Matt Canady (11 ppg)

How do you stop a triple threat?  Teams in the 5B D3A division at the State Championships found out quickly, you don’t.  Triple Threat’s only loss came at the hands of the Wildcats, but the team was able to come back and avenge the loss in the championship game, winning the title by a score of 40-24.

Golden Eagles (5B D3B)

Head Coach: Jeff Robinson

Top Scorer: Caleb Haines (10 ppg)

The Golden Eagles overcame all odds to win the state title last weekend.  After losing to the Independence Patriots by 14 points early in the tournament, they found themselves facing off with that same team in the championship game.  The Golden Eagles soared this time though, defeating the Patriots 30-21.

Wichita Lady Magic (6G D1)

Head Coach: Marcus Myers

Top Scorer: Desiray Kernal (12.5 ppg)

The Wichita Lady Magic showed off some offensive magic of their own this past weekend, averaging an astounding 45.6 points per contest.  An early loss to the Della Lamb Running Angels wasn’t enough to keep the Lady Magic from winning gold as they came back to defeat Della Lamb 51-40 in the title game.

Wolf Pack (6G D2)

Head Coach: Jason Dampier

Top Scorer: Kerrigan Gamm (21.5 ppg)

After losing a close game in their first pool matchup against the Blue Devils, the Wolf Pack stuck together and went on to win their next three games by an average of 16 ppg to set up a rematch with the Blue Devils in the championship game.  The Wolf Pack prevailed this time around, outlasting the Blue Devils 38-32.

Thunder (6G D3)

Head Coach: Kirk Amos

Top Scorer: Jaycie Stubbs (13.3 ppg)

The Thunder made a lot of noise at the State Championships this past weekend, sweeping the division on their way to the gold.  The Thunder rolled in the championship game, defeating B3C Explosion 37-13.

Suns (6B D3A)

Head Coach: Earl Pardo

Top Scorer: Luke Rafanan (9.5 ppg)

The Suns were too hot to handle at the State Championships, going 4-0 and averaging a double-digit margin of victory for the tournament.  The Prince of Peace Cardinals did their best to cool The Suns off in the championship game, but fell short losing by a score of 28-21.

KC Mavericks (6B D3B)

Head Coach: Brian Davis

Top Scorer: Weston Davis (12.7 ppg)

After losing their first pool matchup to the KC Titans, The Mavericks cruised the rest of the tournament defeating their opponents by an average of 17 ppg.  The Mavericks defeated the Blue Springs Rebels in the championship game 47-31 to earn the gold medal.

Wildcats (6B D3C)

Head Coach: Monty Mitchell

Top Scorer: Taray Winfrey (10.5 ppg)

It was never even close.  The Wildcats went 5-0 at the State Championships winning by an average of 24.8 ppg.  From the first tip, the Wildcats’ opponents had no answer for their all-around attack.  The Wildcats defeated the Fieldhouse Clippers 64-42 in the championship game to earn the state title.

Les Chats Blue (7G D1)

Head Coach: Conrad Weledji

Tournament MVP: Brooke Lansford

The ladies of Les Chats Blue dazzled at the State Championships, going 5-0 and winning the 7th grade girls title.  They did it with a mix of offensive firepower and defensive prowess, averaging 35 ppg while only allowing 22.8 ppg.  Les Chats Blue defeated B3C Xplosion 40-33 in the title game.

Kansas Hoopsters (7G D2)

Head Coach: Scott Smith

Top Scorer: Macy Smith (7 ppg)

The Kansas Hoopsters went 5-0 at the State Championships, proving that they are at the top of the class in the division.  The Hoopsters were excellent offensively averaging 34.4 ppg for the tournament.  They defeated the KC MetroStars in the championship game by a score of 32-20.

Lady Cougars (7G D3)

Head Coach: Robert Johnson

Top Scorer: Patricia Thomas (11 ppg)

The Lady Cougars cruised to the state title thanks in large part to their defensive intensity.  They held opponents to an average of 17.7 ppg throughout the tournament.  The Lady Cougars defeated MV Eclipse White in the title game 35-16.

Kearney Bulldogs (7B D3)

Head Coach: Whitney Weakley

Top Scorer: Addison Marshall (14 ppg)

The Kearney Bulldogs dominated the 7th grade division this past weekend, going 5-0 with an average margin of victory of 19.8 points for the tournament.  Kearney defeated Fieldhouse Thunder 51-27 in the championship game to claim the gold.

Eclipse Red (8G D1)

Head Coach: Hal Bentley

Top Scorer: Hunter Bentley (17.5 ppg)

Eclipse Red exploded offensively at the State Championships, “eclipsing” at least 47 points in each of their five games.  They averaged an impressive 52.6 points per contest on their way to a 5-0 record.  Eclipse defeated the KC MetroStars in the championship game 49-45.

Northland Heat (8G D2)

Head Coach: Michelle Smith

Tournament MVP: Kallie Runions

Buckets didn’t come easy against the Northland Heat at the State Championships, as the team only allowed an average of 13.7 ppg.  Northland Heat coasted to the state title defeating KC Chaos 46-15.

Tigers (8G D3)

Head Coach: Kevin Gray

Top Scorer: Sammy Blystone (19.5 ppg)

The Tigers came out on top at the State Championships in what was a very tough division.  The Tigers scratched and clawed their way to a 4-0 record while averaging 48 ppg.  They defeated Fieldhouse Shock 44-39 in the title game to earn the gold.

Blazers (8B D3)

Head Coach: Dave Johns

Tournament MVP: Zach Bass

The Blazers were very impressive at the State Championships going 5-0 in the 8th grade boys division and defeating their opponents by an average of 13 ppg.  Offensively the Blazers were too much for their opponents as they averaged 50.2 ppg.  The Blazers defeated KC Jayhawks Select in the championship game 48-34.

Kangaroo Classic Wrap-Up

Dec. 7-9, 2012

UMKC- Swinney Center

The Campus Challenge started off with a bang this past weekend with the Kangaroo Classic at UMKC.  As teams looked to jump out to an early lead in the points race, we witnessed some memorable team and individual moments on the hardwood.  While the winners from this past weekend are in the driver’s seat in the points race, the action has only just started to heat up!  With two legs left to go, it’s any team’s race to win.  Congratulations to all of the division winners at the Kangaroo Classic:

·         Third Grade Boys – KCN Red Devils

·         Fourth Grade Boys – Blue Devils

·         Fourth Grade Girls – Fieldhouse Elite

·         5th Grade Boys DI – Dora Falcons

·         5th Grade Boys DII – Olathe Ravens

·         5th Grade Boys DIII – Fieldhouse Thunder

·         5th/6th Grade Girls – KS Dreamteam

·         6th Grade Boys DI – Powergroup 2019

·         6th Grade Boys DII (B) – MO Fusion

·         6th Grade Boys DII (C) – KC Spurs

Dora Falcons Rise to the Occasion in their First USSSA Tournament

A quick Google search on the town of Dora, MO will take you to a place with a population of just over 1,000 residents, one K-12 school with a total enrollment of right around 350 students, a post office, five churches, and just a few other businesses.  To make a comparison, my high school alma mater (Olathe North High School) averages 455 students per grade.  So when the 5th grade Dora Falcons team knocked off Powergroup 2020 by seven points in the Div I championship game this past weekend, it left many people, including myself, wondering what they are putting in the water down in Dora, MO.

Up until last weekend, Powergroup 2020 boasted an unblemished 7-0 record and had beaten their opponents by an average of almost 20 points per game; not an easy feat.  On paper, a team of seven kids from a town with just over 1,000 people shouldn’t stand a chance against the powerhouse that is Powergroup (their name is very fitting).  On top of this, there is something else that makes Dora’s improbable victory that much more fascinating: They did it with just one 5th grader on the roster.  The six remaining players on the roster consist of four 4th graders and two 3rd graders.  So what is it, then, that makes the Falcons such a difficult team to face?

It starts with head coach, Rick Luna and his three triplets on the team, Mason, Auston and Bryson Luna.  Rick is the head basketball coach in Dora and has great knowledge of the game which he shares with his sons, who he calls “gymrats.”  The three of them, along with their younger brother Landon who is one of two 3rd graders on the team, regularly sit on the bench during the high school games and even participate in practices against Dora’s junior varsity squad.  “There probably isn’t a single play my high school team runs that Mason, Auston and Bryson couldn’t tell you how to run.”  The years of coaching experience and the knowledge that Rick has for the game can be seen by the tremendous discipline displayed by the young kids.  Rich Parrett, the tournament director at the Kangaroo Classic, said that “even in warm-ups when a lot of the other teams are messing around – as young kids tend to do – they (Dora) stayed very business-like.”

Connor Rackley and Issac Haney round out the starting five for Dora along with the Luna triplets, and both play huge roles for the team.  Rackley, who is the lone 5th grader and also the lone “big-man” on the team, gives the Falcons an inside presence on both sides of the ball but can also step out and hit big shots when needed.  In fact, it was Rackley’s late 3-pointer that sealed the fate for the Falcons against Powergroup.  Haney, the smooth point guard for Dora, is the floor general and another polished scorer to compliment leading scorer, Mason Luna who dumped 21 in the championship game.  Bryson and Auston Luna provide the spark defensively while Colby Hoover and Landon Luna give the team much needed minutes off the bench.

The next opportunity for Dora and Powergroup to meet up will be at the Jayhawk Classic on Jan. 5-7 in Lawrence, KS.  You can bet that Powergroup is itching for some redemption against the Falcons, but one thing is for certain: Dora will be up for the challenge.

****The Stars Came out to Shine****

JD Roberts

(KCN Red Devils, 3B)

The KCN Red Devils won the 3rd grade boys division in their first appearance with JD leading the efforts. Weathering illness throughout, JD was shades of Michael Jordan in game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals, leading his team in scoring including a 12-point effort in the championship game. JD also played in two games for the 4th grade Red Devils team and led the team in scoring in one of those contests with 13 points.

Demarco Smith

(KC Jayhawks Premiere, 8B D1)

Unselfish.  If there is one word you could use to describe Demarco’s game, this is it.  Demarco is a rare talent, a pass-first point guard who plays with high energy and great passion for the game.  He averaged 8 points and 7 assists over the course of the tournament leading his team to two pool play wins.  Jayhawks coach Kenneth Green calls him “the coach on the court; the type of player most coaches covet.”

Mason Luna

(Dora Falcons, 5B D1)

One of three triplets on the team and the coach’s son, Mason was virtually unstoppable for the surprise Dora Falcons this weekend.  He led the way for the Falcons with games of 21, 22 and 23 on route to the 5th grade Division I title.  Mason was little known around the KC area before this weekend… Not anymore.  If teams are going to stop the Dora Falcons they have got to find a way to slow down #24.

Brian Garcia

(Fieldhouse Clippers, 5B D2)

Brian put on a clinic at the Kangaroo Classic, running the point the way the position was meant to be played.  He displayed the kind of all-around game for the Clippers that will have coaches at the next level salivating.  Brian led his team to a 2-1 record in pool play while averaging 13 points, 5 assists, 3 steals and 3 rebounds.

Jack Mosh

(B3C Runnin Gunners White, 3B D1)

Take a look at Jack’s statline for the tournament and you’ll understand the Runnin Gunners’ offensive gameplan: Get the ball into Jack Mosh’s hands.  Jack accounted for over half of the team’s points throughout the tournament including 9 out 14 points in the championship game.  He looks to be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.

We will be doing various Star Watch editions throughout the season.  If you have a player that has a great weekend, please go to the Star Watch Nomination form and let us know!

We were very excited and pleasantly surprised to see the activities teams had planned to get involved in this project. We thank all of you greatly for participating!

This was a two-fold project; one to “treat” another team in their division and secondly to participate in the knock-out games for donations to Make a Wish Foundation in honor of Dominic Palacio who recently died of cancer.

Our first ever Team of the Month winner is:

Power  Group in our 5th/6th boys division

Power Group went above and beyond to honor Dominic by donating $100 to the Make a Wish Foundation in the name of the Northland Vikings as well as giving a framed picture signed by players in the tournament to Team Dominic and to Dominic’s family. The team also helped organize the Knock-out game for donations and created the posters for the event. They really took hold of the opportunity to get the team involved in this citizenship project. A big thanks to Power Group’s coaches, team parents, Katie & Amy and, all the players!

Natalie — Thank you so much for the wonderful award and recognition.  It was a great weekend for our kids and families, both basketball-wise and being involved in all of the off-court activities.  We will always support your events because you run them the right way and for the right reasons.  We are privileged and honored to be the first Team of the Month recipient in your Competition with Civility Citizenship campaign.  It means a lot to me individually and to our organization as a whole.  We are much prouder of this accomplishment than any success we may enjoy on the court.  Take care and keep up the good work.

Honorable Mentions

KC Force – HS Girls: The team made custom labels for water bottles with the Team “Lady Deuces” name on them and made Halloween Pumpkins with blow pops attached for everyone in the HS division!

KS Cagers – 8th Boys: The team gave Halloween cupcakes to the players on the Power Group 8th grade team.

Stingerz – 8th Girls: The team offered another team their choice of bench seating and to show good sportsmanship they worked hard to help the other team up when on the ground and were positive and encouraging to the referees, teammates and opposing team.

Lady Deuces – HS Girls: Filled 16 bags of Halloween themed candy and treated the Greyhounds to this Survival/Good Luck Goody Bag with this poem:

Best of Luck from the Lady Deuces

Alright Ladies it’s “Crunch” time,

Here are a few tips that may help be a “Lifesaver” for the tournament!

Keep your “Eye” on the Ball.

Don’t “Snicker” at the Ref’s bad calls.

Take the game serious; don’t act like a “Dum-Dum”

Be a “Sweettart” to your teammates.

Hang on to the ball and don’t be a “Butterfinger”

Help out all the “Nerds” on the court.

Be a “Smartie” on Defense

Play extra hard and be a “Starburst” on Offense.

Have a great time at this tournament! “Laffy Taffy” lots
and be sure and show’em all your “Twix”!!

Hugs & Kisses

4 REAL Sports is proud to announce our

Team of the Month winner for December, 2011

the B3c Runnin’ Gunners Orange (5th Boys).

The Runnin Gunners Orange donated more than 325 canned food items for Hillcrest Ministries in Liberty.  Parents said the players were willing to spend their own money to buy more canned goods, eager to donate the most items and win Team of the Month!  We appreciate the team’s enthusiasm and eagerness to help others; these young players are growing into great citizens who are learning early that the smallest deed can help others, especially when a team works together!

Congratulations! For their dedication to this citizenship project

Dear Natalie and Friends:

All of us at Della Lamb Community Services wanted to express our gratitude to you who donated a toy or toys this past weekend (Dec 9-11) at the (Cardinal Classic) tournament. You single handedly helped us gain 500+ new toys.  It goes without saying you all are truly “Angels” and we thank you for your amazing support in  Della’s Operation Santa Claus! Without your help this year it would not have been possible to assist so many families.

Thank you for your help again, we look forward to partnering with you in future events!

On behalf of:

Judy McGonigle-Akers and Tony Woods

Executive Vice President, Youth Services Director
